A runway is closed for months as crews build a bridge deck to support an “Engineered Material Arresting System,” a softer surface designed to stop a plane if it overruns.
Your next flight in or out of Logan International Airport in Boston could be delayed, but Massport says there is a good reason why and it all has to do with safety.
Runway 27 is closed for 75 days so crews can finish building a bridge deck at the end of the runway to support an Engineered Material Arresting System, or EMAS.

The bridge is designed to hold a fully-loaded 747 jet, which is about 1 million pounds. EMAS is something that is required by the Federal A
“I would say it’s porous concrete, crushable-type concrete-type material, is the best way to explain it,” said Bob Lynch, Director of A
The specialized surface is designed to stop an overrunning plane if it can’t stop on its own.
“It would go directly into it,” said Lynch. “That’s what we would want the pilot to do.”
Experts say EMAS could have helped to stop an Amazon plane from crashing at Miami Airport earlier this month.
“It certainly would slow down an aircraft if it was there,” said Lynch.
Crews are working on a tight timeline. Large cranes and other large equipment are working 24/7.
“This project spans two construction years, 75 calendar days each year,” said Sarah Dennechuk, deputy director for airfield projects for Massport. “So, at the end of Day 75, I should be gone and the runway should be reopened.”
Closing a key runway is not something the airport takes lightly. Massport chose this time of year in consultation with the airlines but it says it must get this work done before the busy Thanksgiving travel period.
“We have to work 24/7 to minimize the impacts, cause we realize shutting a runway down is no easy task,” said Dennechuck.
